un resolution
The UN security council is supposed to vote today on the French proposal on Darfur. One of the articles I linked the other day outlined some of the political ramifications of this proposal, particularly that of the use of the International Criminal Court. The problem is that the ICC has not been ratified by the United States. Thus, the US was put into a bit of a no-win situation, either wiggle on it's ICC stand, or veto the measure, causing further delays on action in Sudan.
Fortunately, it appears that the first option is the one the US is going to take. I thought it may go that way, since politically it is the easier of the two to put a positive spin on and morally it is the right thing to do (there has already been too much delay on this issue).
So, hopefully this will pass . . .

connecting on the web
This morning I'm looking at my web stats for this site, and I found some cool things. The coolest part came from looking at some of the referring sites. Through that, I found that my site came up during the following google searches:
1. Awesomeness 2. Jobs a a mattress tester.

new favorite commercial
I can't sleep. I have to work in about 5 1/2 hours.
Anyway, I love that new McDonald's comercial, the "A good woman is like a McGriddle." I like it because I would be easily as oblivious as that guy.
I have a friend who is reading a book that apparently has 5 things you can do to guarantee that you will get a date in 6 months. Impressive, huh. I think I want to read it. But, I know better. I know that really, I only need to take one step: ask her out. But I won't. Because, as me and a roommate concluded about ourselves, I'm afraid of women.
Maybe someday I'll kick this fear of rejection. I mean, can rejection really be worse than this pinned up frustration.
Oh, and sorry about the emo. Anyway, that commercial cracks me up.

upcoming plans
So, here I am back in Cincinnati. Over my previous years in Cincy, there was much I wanted to do, but being the lazy person I am, I never did. But, this time is going to be different. Between now and Augustish, I am going to do the following:
Go to a Reds game. Go to the zoo. Go to the symphony. Go to the art museum. Go to the museum center.
At first, I was thinking about maybe doing it all in one day, kind of like on Ferris Bueller's Day off. But, then I realized how expensive that would be, so I'll spread it out over the next few months. And, since I first came up with this, a few other things have been added. First of all, in an effort by Mel to educate and culturefy (culturefy is my word, not hers), the opera has been added to the list. And this is a good thing, because even though I took music appreciation my Freshman year of college, I missed a lot of it because some of my senior "role models" would convince me to skip or leave early to go eat breakfast. Even still, I was there on the day we discussed opera, and the professor showed us "What's Opera Doc?" So, that's the extent of my opera education. I want to see Rigaletto. However, I wish "The Marraige of Figaro" was playing, just so afterwards I could say, "I don't know what those I-talian ladies were singing about. And the truth is, I don't want to know. Hopefully, they were singing about something so beautiful that it can't be described with words." And if anyone knows what I'm talking about, well, I may give you some sort of prize.
And then the final thing: The Fried Chicken Tour of the South.
This all started when Ed and I were lamenting the lack of decent fried chicken in Cincinnati. Anyway, a few days later, we were watching part of the SEC basketball tournament, which was sponsered by "Alabama Tourism." Ed commented that we should go to Alabama, since they probablly had good fried chicken. I pointed out that we need not drive all the way to Alabama, since Kentucky has plenty of good fried chicken. Thus, the premise of the Fried Chicken Tour of the South was born.
Basically, it is a contest, who has the better fried chicken: Kentucky or Alabama.
So, here is how it goes:
Drive through Kentucky (via Louisville), and pick up some chicken. Drive through Tennesee (via Nashville), and stop and eat some chicken. Drive to Alabama, pick up some chicken. Drive to Georgia, to Savannah, were Ed can get some good lemonade and I cn get some souther style sweet tea. This is where the judging will take place. Drive back through Tennesee (via Knoxville), and maybe stop by Gatlinburg. Drive back through Kentucky, with a stop in Corbin to visit the Col. Sanders museum. Arrive back in Cincinnati.
Awesome, huh. So, it looks like I have an eventful spring/summer planned. If anyone wants to help me cross stuff off the list, I'm looking for people!!!

no cohesive thread here
In the olden days of this blog, about every other post was a list of about 5 random thoughts. Of late, I've gotten rather verbose in my posting, so for old times sake:
1. A cool answered prayer: I picked up some extra hours at work. Someone quit, so now I get to add Tuesday morning to my work schedule. I'm still a few hours short of what I ought to be working, but every little bit can only help.
2. I don't want to talk about, hear about, or see basketball for the next two weeks. Seriously, as I do every year, I am avoiding sports radio, ESPN.com and whatever else might bring up the topic of college basketball. Any basketball related comments will be "deleted by host".
3. Apparently, I was wrong in one of my earlier posts. Clearly, the Baroque era was NOT one of the golden ages of music. I totally forgot about the Romantic Era. To find out why I am wrong, check out Mel's blog. However, I will say that a few things have been left out of the debate. First of all, Handel could easily take any Romantic composer in an arm wrestling match. And let's not forget that Pachabel is the father of the modern cowbell. If not for Bach, the A minor chord would have never caught on.
And if you think that I am resorting to being smart aleck because I totally couldn't hang with her in this discussion, well, you are right.
4. Speaking of cowbell, Tommy brought his from home. That means we can now have cowbell anytime we want. If it wasn't so late, I would be playing cowbell right now.
5. Todays Sudan links (which, by the way are ripped off from Passion Of The Present, which you can access above: This is a great article dealing with the lack of media coverage about Sudan and genocides in general (read me)
This one deals with some of the issues regarding the UN Resolutions. (read me)

the blog turns one
As of Tuesday, I have been blogging for one year now. It's been a great deal of fun. It's helped me clear my head at times, and it's helped me keep up with friends near and far. I thought about doing a year in review post, but I'm way too lazy to pull that together. But, I did go through my archives just to see where all I was over the last year. Then I figured if anyone really cared, they could just go through the archives as well instead of me making up some post about it. But, I did notice one thing: my blog lacks the obligatory "introductory post." You know, the whole "who I am" and "what I'm going to do with this blog" post, usually the first post. So, here it is, the introductory post, a year late, and a little bit different.
Who I am
I think thunderstorms are awesome. I think summer is the best season of the year. I think Chick-Fil-A is the best fast food resturaunt ever. I don't miss very many Kentucky games. I think Kentucky is the best of the 50 states. I might live overseas someday, but I'm not sure yet. I think my brother is the coolest guy I know. I never turn down a hug (thanks to Brack's advice). I walk to clear my mind, I play piano to clear my soul. I play guitar to get chicks (and NO, it really doesn't work.) I only like coffee about twice a year. I think Cherry Coke is the best drink ever invented. I just want to be alone sometimes. I can't stand being alone sometimes. I think I could be a pretty good writer, if I wasn't so lazy. I have trouble putting words and music together, but I can usually write one or the other. I think the Baroque and Classic Rock eras were the golden ages of music. I think “The Critic” was underrated. I think U2 is overrated. I think Peter Gallagher's eyebrows are one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I am generally an optimist. I fear rejection above all other things. I lean somewhat liberal politically, but I don't think the Democratic party has a clue right now. I bowl anywhere between 50 and 150 (and last night was closer to 50). I think Brahm's Requiem is the most brilliant composition ever. I think the violin and the piano are the two most beautiful instruments. I have a great sense of direction. I have a brilliant long term memory. I have a horrible short term memory. I think DC Comics ruined Mad Magazine. I'm not down with the DC Talk. I don't like worship CD's, yet 90 percent of my CD collection is worship. I feel I've done a pretty good job of avoiding Christian pop culture. I don't acknowledge that Michael Bolton even exists. I think the Sandlot is the best movie ever. I wish I had Michael “Squints” Palladorious' skills with the ladies. I don't think I'll ever be good at the whole "dating" thing. I love biscuits and gravy. I think Weird Al is a genius. I don't want to be rich. I kind of want to be famous. I'm convinced that July 31 WILL be a national holiday someday. I know I have an odd sense of humor, but I enjoy it.

anoint thee with oil
In case anyone was wondering what the "anoint the doors of CCU" comment Kevin made was about, there is actually a back story to that . . .
April 2001. I was interning at the Christian Campus Fellowship at Vincennes University. Some students among a couple of the campus ministries, out of a desire for unity, put together a joint praise service, called Awakening 2001. I was asked to lead the joint worship team, which I was glad to do. Ironically, this event led to more division than unity, but that's not the issue here.
Awakening was to be held on a Monday. The previous Friday night, some of the team members met on campus to pray over the event. Well, one of the girls on the planning team (I think she was the prayer team leader) had a friend who was visiting from Indiana State. She had him give a testamony. So, he dives right in, and the premise of the whole thing is that he had gone around the campus of ISU anointing all of the doorknobs with oil. As he goes on, I'm kinda thinking, "I don't really think there is a biblical precedent for that." So, then, he talks about how this anointing left an estimated $3000 worth of damage to the campus. But, he didn't care, because, as he rationalized it, he was doing God's work.
A weird night . . . a weird time . . .
VANDALISM for JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, it feels good to have finished up my 15 page paper!!!!!

i can show my face at church tomorrow
Well, I suppose I can on any Sunday. But, had a certain event gone a different way, well . . .
Before I moved to Cincinnati back in 1999, I kinda liked UC's basketball team. Back in 1992, when they were making their final four run as Huggins was bringing them back into national prominance, I remember rooting for them to make it, and even rooting for them in their game against Michagan that they ultimately lost. Throughout the rest of the decade, I remember kinda liking them. Not being a fan or anything like that, but if they were playing (especially against Louisville), I was all for them.
Then I moved to Cincinnati.
Here's the thing: In central and western Kentucky, the 2 areas in which I spent most of the 90's, UC isn't on the radar, at least as far as rivalries go. Sure, they are important since they are a top 25 team, but they don't register in the same way that Louisville or Indiana do. So, when I got here, I was really shocked at all of the trash talk against Kentucky from the UC fans. Apparently, they whole UK/UC "rivalry" is much bigger in this area. Which, makes sense.
So, as I have to put up with and defend against all of the trash talk, I come to really dislike UC. They become one of my least favorite teams. I'm constantly badmouthing them. And the debate become constant about who is better. Unfortunatly, there is no game to settle the debate.
Until March Madness 2005.
Unfortunatly, prior arangements prevented me from watching the game live. So, I had to tape it. At 11:30, I was able to pop in the tape. The whole way home, I avoided listening to the radio, I get home and avoid the internet and everything. But, there is one problem . . . when I put in the tape, before it starts playing, I catch a glimpse of the 11:00 news. And, of course, this is the point of the night when the sports comes on. I only catch a brief second, but what I see is Chuck Hayes with a kind of somber look on his face. It looked like a "This is the end of my college career press conference." Then, the tape starts playing, and there I am expecting the worst.
The game starts, and I'm just uneasy the whole time. I almost just fast forwarded through the entire game. With five minutes left, the game is close and I'm just sick at my stomach. Why such a reaction, you may ask. Well, there are a couple of reasons. First of all, the NCAA tournament is one of my favorite events. However, whenever Kentucky gets eliminated, it really loses something. If they lose in the second round, that means that I lose 4 whole rounds. It's kind of a sad thing for me. And secondly, the whole showing my face thing. Living in Kentucky, usually the worst you have to deal with is Louisville fans after a loss to UL. But typically, unless you live in Louisville, you only have to deal with a few UL fans. Losing to UC, in the tournament no less, would be even worse, considering that I a. Live just a few blocks from UC, b. Live with 3 UC students, 3. Most of my friends go to UC, 4. A bunch of people I work with go to or are UC fans. So, a lot was at stake.
Finally, with about a minute left, UK up by about 8, and UC throwing up a barrage of bricks, I began to feel comfortable.
So, I figured by this time, I would be ready to talk some trash. But, that's not my reaction. With this game, the whole UC/UK thing is kinda settled. That was my whole reason for not liking UC. But now, I can go on back to liking UC again.
Until next time they play, anyway.

i need advice
I've decided that my goal for the rest of the semester is to get kicked out of Cincinnati Christian University. I can't decide how. I might start my own heresy, but I'm not sure what angle to go with yet. If you have any suggestions about how I can get kicked out (new heresy or something else) feel free to let me know. If I use your suggestion, you will get some type of reward.

censorship?
On Boston Legal Sunday night, one of the sub-plots was about a high school that had blocked Fox News using a v-chip on the TV's that students could watch before or after school. As I watched it, it reminded me of one of the funniest signs at my academic institution, Cincinnati Christian University. This sign is in the cafeteria, near where 2 TV's are . . .
One TV will stay on Fox News and the other one will stay on ESPN. Do NOT ask to change the channels. If you do not like the programming, do not sit in this area.
I don't even know where to start with this. What would posess someone to even post a sign like that. Why those two channels? What if I want to see the game that's on ESPN 2?

the worst runs of my life
Each day at work, 2 lucky people at 10:30 and 2 lucky people at 3:30 get to go on runs. Runs involve potentialy 3 different things: 1. Delivering Stuff, 2. Picking Stuff Up, and 3. Getting stuff signed and bringing it back. Depending on the crew you work with, there may be a big fight over people who want to go, there may be a big fight over people not wanting to go, or with any luck there is only one person who wants to go.
Typically on Mondays, I'm the only one who really wants to go. So, Monday is typically my day (although I usually get them on Wednesday as well.) I like doing runs. First of all, I like walking. It's one of my hobbies. And in this case, I get paid for it. Pretty awesome. Secondly, it gets me out of the office, and gets me out of setting up lunches, which I don't like. It's a pretty good deal for me.
Well, yesterday was a bad day for runs. I had 5 stops. And on 4 of them, something went wrong.
My first dropoff was at 5/3 bank. Well, I get there, check the envelop again, and there is no floor number. Just a maildrop number, which means nothing to anyone outside of the 5/3 mailroom. And, if you've ever been to the 5/3 center downtown, you know it's freaking huge. It's one really tall building attached to one really long building. Most buildings downtown have some type of directory in the lobby. This place does not. But, I notice that it is going to the trust department, and I know that I've been to the trust department within the last few weeks. For some reason, I think it's on the 12th floor. So, I try that. Turns out I was wrong. So, I try the 13th, and then the 14th floor. Still no luck. So, I go down to the second floor and to find out if maybe someone can point me into the right direction. So, I ask a teller. Tellers are great at looking up your account and counting your money. They are not so strong at knowing what's going on in the rest of the building. So, I try some more guessing. I try the 5th floor of the long part of the building. No luck, BUT there is actually a RECEPTIONIST (more on that in a second)!!!!!!! And she points me to the 17th floor of the tall side of the building. Which is correct. So, after 15 minutes of wandering 5/3, the package is delivered.
So, off to my next delivery, which is across the street to some of the Key Bank offices. Anyway, so I get to the correct floor with no problem this time. However, there is a trend that is going around many downtown offices: to save money, receptionists are being replaced with a sign, phone, and phonelist. The sign says "Call your party at the extention listed." It is one of the most annoying things ever for an errand boy like me. And today was particularly problematic. There was a special number for people making deliveries. So, I call that number, and I get voicemail. I call again, voicemail again. I call a third time, voicemail again. This does me no good. So, I decided to go on to the next place and try again on the way back.
So, my for my third stop, I go to empty out our PO box. Nothing goes wrong here, but it is important to note that I have added stuff to my stack.
So, I go to my fourth stop, which is a place I know well, since we go there all the time. I make my dropoff to the overworked receptionist, who then stops me and says "Hold on, I have some files to go back with you." I wasn't excpeting a pickup here. And these are large files. I find out later that these were scheduled for the 3:30 run. So, I've now added more to my stack. Which is kinda bad, because the next stop is a good trek away, AND it is also a pickup.
So, I go to my fifth stop, and start up the elevator and sheer panick comes over me. I notice that the package that I was supposed to drop off on my second stop is now missing. For those of you who have never worked in the errand running industry before, you will get fired for this. I grab my pickup, and start to retrace. I know have a large stack of stuff to carry around, and I had about 8 blocks to retrace. Well, I end up at the place where I had done my previous delivery, and there was the package on the reception desk.
So, I head back to stop number 2, and finally I get someone on the other line. I make the dropoff, and head back the office with my job still intact.
All of that took about an hour and 40 minutes.

it's madness
My favorite holiday: Selection Sunday.
The brackets are out!!!!!!
It's going to be a fun tournament. In the first round, I get to watch Kentucky knock out Eastern Kentucky, which, as a Western Kentucky alum, is going to be fun for me. Then, in the second round, the potential matchup is:
Kentucky vs UC
That is, if UC doesn't get beat in the first round. That's a big if. But, if the matchup does happen, I think I'll have a basketball party on Saturday. Everyone is invited so I can mock ALL of you as Kentucky humiliates the Bearcats. Okay, I'm kidding. I won't be that bad, I promise!!!
Seriously, though, if you need someone to watch basketball with this March, come on by. I pretty much watch constantly.
And seriously, UK/UC. Party time!! If you are around. And if my roommates are okay with it.

sledding practice
When I was in college, my friend Brack and I would occasionally take a cardboard box and go sledding down the staircase that led up to our apartments.
Good times.
This morning, I relived that memory. Only there were a few exceptions:
1. Brack was not present. 2. There was no cardboard box. 3. It was not intentional.
That's right. I fell down the stairs. But it's a hazard I tell you. Here's the thing: The steps are very narrow. If I stand on them, my toes hang off. Plus, we have really cheap carpet, and while I don't understand the physics behind it, it can get kind of slick in some spots.
So, this morning, walking down the stairs on my way to the kitchen for a glass of water, on the first step aftern the landing, I lose my footing and go sliding down the stairs. It was kinda awesome, actually. Just like sledding, without the sled. And a little bumpier. And a little more painful. But, I'm not the injury prone type, so my streak of no broken bones or sprains remains totall intact.
Plus, if this were an Olympic event, I think I would have done really well.
Oh, and if anyone is curios:
Respiratory Illness 2005 Update:
I'm feeling much better. We are in phase 3 now, where I am once again coherent, I have my strenght back, but I still have some trouble breathing. But, I should be all better in a couple of days.

its official
Respiratory illness 2005 is officially underway. Actually, I think it may be the flu this year. I don't know. I went to work at 7:00, and by 9:00 I had to come home. Then I went to bed until 6:00. I don't have a thermometer, but I'm pretty sure my temprature got up to about 101. The cool part about a fever that high is that I had some really awesome hallucinations this afternoon. I think I was some kind of spy or something like that. I don't really remember.

the time has come
This cough has presisted beyond my regular moning asthma cough.
I think my annual respiratory illness is coming on.
I'm picking up extra hours at work tomorrow.

life in the bachelor pad
So, we've been in this apartment for just over 2 months now, and we still haven't fully settled in yet. We just have more junk than space. For a while on Saturday and today, I got on a bit of a cleaning kick. Saturday I tackled the bathroom and kitchen, and today I took on the living room. One of the things about our living rooms is that we keep a bunch of guitar amps just lying around the floor. Well, as I was cleaning, I decided to set them on the endtables. Then I got the most brilliant idea:
Surround sound.
With the right arrangement of cables and adapters, I knew I could set it up. So I made a run to Radio Shack and got half of the stuff I needed to make it happen. For now, I have my amp and an amp that Justin Sanford left over here the first week of January and still hasn't taken home yet hooked up in the front of the room and by the TV. It sounds so awesome. Tomorrow I'll go and get the rest of the stuff and hook up Brent and Tommy's amps in the back of the room.
Our system will be the envy of Clifton. I just know it!!!!!!!!!!

calm after the storm
I've had such a peaceful week after one of the most challenging times emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. But, over the last week, I have learned so many things and have been encouraged by several people, many who probablly have no idea they were doing so. I would go a lot deeper, but I'm not in a writing mood right now.
|
the truth about the golden girls
Tonight I was hanging out with Ed, my roommate. Through a series of events that involved websites such as jumptheshark.com, we learned that Estelle Geddy, who played Sophia on the Golden Girls is in fact a couple of months younger than Bea Arthur, who plays her daughter. Ed was so shocked that he called Tommy, and then called his mom. It turns out that his mom already knew. Ed was upset that she never told him.
After that, we made a fashionably late appearance at the STE party. I guess I'm just too old for that sort of thing (plus I'm a horrible dancer). And, the person I hoped to see there wasn't there. But, there was some fun to be had.

sounds of my soul
Sometimes I wish I could blog the stuff that I make up while playing my keyboard. There is something about those melodies that express the innermost emotions of my soul better that I can with words.
Sometimes I wish I could express them better with words.
But hey, it's who I am.

Mar 4, 2005
the champ is here . . .
It's very rare that I can fall asleep sitting up. But there are a few occasions every now and then when I just get really drowsy all of the sudden and can't stay awake. The most memorable was my senior year of high school when I went to all-district choir (back before I started playing guitar and could actually sing on key.) Anyway, during the rehearsal after lunch, the director was going over the pronunciations for a song in Swahili. Well, I got really drowsy and started nodding off. So, I never did learn the Swahili for that song, and during the performance I just had to sing "watermelon" the whole time.
Well, tonight I went to hear Dr. Tony Evans speak. And he is a TREMENDOUS speaker. Unfortunately, I had another one of those drowsy spells and couldn't stay awake. So I missed half of it. But the half I heard was awesome. He really convicted me about how little the church has done in the way of racial reconcilliation. In fact, the church was the problem for so many years. Too often, we cite worship style as the reason that our churches are divided among racial lines. But, I've observed that people of any race are willing to worship in any style. The division is much deeper than choice of music. It's really kind of tragic that so few people are concerned about this.
Anyway, after my "nap," the group was going to hotel Ruwanda. I really wanted to see it, but I'm so tired that I came home. So here I am, all alone. So, I decided it was time to indulge in my new addiction, "PONG!!!"
Tonight, the World Series of Pong was held right here in my house. And here are the results (best of 7):
Game 1: Computer 21, Bryant 20 Game 2: Bryant 21, Computer 17 Game 3: Bryant 21, Computer 12 Game 4: Computer 21, Bryant 13 Game 5: Bryant 21, Computer 14 Game 6; Bryant 21, Computer 13
Bryant wins 4 games to 2!!!!!!!!
I now move up to the advanced level. I hope you all enjoy my posts about pong, because there is going to be a LOT more!!!!!

christmas in march
So now I know what Santa Clause feels like on Christmas morning.
I've been at UCC all day moving and cleaning stuff so the temporary office can be set up. I'm all blackened with soot from head to toe right now. But, we got a lot done. Based on my other attempts to wash my hands earlier today, I thing I may have a blackish tint for a while.
I never really understood what "smoke damage" was until today. Everything is such a mess, it's hard to get it off, and some stuff that was nowhere near the fire is now unusable.
But, I've kinda wondered why I ended up back here, and now I have at least some glimpse into why.

the banned list
In my apartment, my roomates and I have come up with a list of things that are banned from the apartment. Over the last couple of days, we have had a bit on a compliance issue.
Yesterday, I came in and found a DVD of the movie "The Bachelor." The problem: Renee Zellweger is on the banned list, so that DVD should not have been in the apartment. So, we had a talk with the offending roommate (who will be left unnamED). It was all a misunderstanding, it came free with the pizza he ordered. So, we just told him to be more careful in the future.
Tonight, though, it was my fault. My friend (and yours) Juliet has a friend on American Idol. She asked for us to vote for her. Of course, I am happy to comply, except for 2 reasons: 1. I hate American Idol, and 2. It's on the banned list. But, I want to help out where possible, so I come up with the following: I don't actually watch the show, but I get the phone number at the end to call in and vote. Still, it's a gray area, because it involves 3 minutes of airtime (since she was contestant number 6) and it involved my participation in the show. But, I did it. However, in the process, Brent catches me. I told him to punch me, but he wouldn't. Luckily, Tommy did punch me later on, so I've done my retribution.
Anywaym for those who have never seen it, here is the list of things that are banned from 2346 Victor St, Apt #2:
