    short term memory

Earlier today I had a great idea for today's blog, then I forgot it. I have the WORST short term memory in the world. I have great long term memory. But my short term is practicaly non-existant. That's why I'm horrible with names. It's who I am.

    1. You really come to appreciate jeans more on casual Friday. If I ever get a campus ministry, I'll be able to wear jeans every day. Then, I'll take them for granted again. At least I don't have to wear a name tag.

    2. Yesterday's storm wasn't nearly as severe as the guy on TV said it was. The lightning was cool though. It was interesting, watching the TV coverage and then going outside to see what it was actually like. How often do we sit back and watch instead of getting out and seeing the real thing?? (deep thought for the afternoon)

    3. Some people are too loud. Especially with the acoustics in this room (I know that makes no sense to anyone reading, but I just had to get it off my chest.)

    4. The server is still down. People are mad. There's nothing I can do.

    5. Now that the TV seasons are over, I have to come up with new things to do with my time. I think I am going to:
    a. Work on re-learning greek.
    b. Try and learn a programming language (to enhance my website design abilities)
    c. Work on some music.
I should try and read some more. Maybe a trip to Barnes and Noble is in the cards for this weekend.

    3 day weekend. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Stormy Thursday

    1. It is most definately sleep weather. I shouldn't have to work on a day like this. Then again, if it's nice out, then I don't want to work either. So, I guess there is no good "work weather."

    2. The server is down, and the phone is ringing off the hook. AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    3. This is horrible!!! All those years of watching, and I never knew!

    4. I'm taking a break from politics/war coverage. I can't handle the hyperbole anymore.

    5. Swingset Swingset, up and down I go (that's for Bill E.)

I just want to be like John Wentz when I grow up.

    Storms, Angst, and Postmodernity

It's storm season. I love storm season!!!!!!!

    1. Well . . . in the ongoing saga that is the job search, I was supposed to have a phone interview last night. And the guy never called. Really, I don't know what to think anymore.

    2. I've been trying to re-learn Greek. Does that make me a loser??? I mean, I've been out of school for a year now. I think I'm going to try and learn Visual Basic or SQL. I know that makes me a geek.

    3. It just occured to me today that the Theme from Diff'rent Strokes is a good theme song for post-modernism.

    4. I get an actual paid holiday on Monday. That's pretty cool. I'm taking the following Monday off. That's 2 4-day work weeks. A lazy man's dream.

    5. I think I am adopting the Pistons as my team for the NBA Playoffs. I still have loyaties to Tayshaun Prince.

    I'm Bored

I have a serious case of writer's block. I think it's because I'm bored. I've been disconnected from any type of ministry for nearly 9 months. I think the break has been good for me. This time last year, I was pretty burned out. With school, my paid church stuff and my non-church stuff, I had taken on way too much. And everything had suffered, especially my paid church stuff. If school had gone 2 more weeks, I would have snapped. But school ended at just the right time. But then, I started the Target gig, and it messed up my sleep so much that I was a zombie all summer long. So, a nice slower pace was nice.

I still haven't decided if I regret leaving Cincinnati or not. Part of me does, but part of me remains convinced that my time was indeed up. UCC and FOCUS have definately been fine without me. I've been less fine without them though.

I've been bored over the last year. While I've recovered from burnout, I've become lazy. Granted, I've always been lazy. But it's a different kind of lazy. I have a TV schedule now. I haven't had a TV schedule in almost a decade (except, durning college me and my friends would gather at my apartment and watch Fox's Sunday lineup. But that was a relational thing.) I used to walk a lot. Now I don't. I don't play my guitar or keyboard often anymore. Worst of all, I don't really have any friends that I do anything with. Blogs and live journals have become my social life.

It hasn't been all bad though. God has taught me a lot about faith over the year. I've been doing a "rapid fire" reading of the Bible. I started in mid-November and should be finished fairly soon (I got kinda lazy in March.) I haven't been picking it apart or anything . . . just kinda getting the overveiw of how God has worked. It's been pretty cool. I've gotten to hang out with my parents over the last year a lot more. I think at some point I'll come to appreciate that more than I do right now . . . kinda like the extra 2 years I got with my brother when he came to WKU.

Mostly though, I have this vision and passion building up in me and no place to do anything with it. It's tough to work so hard toward a goal only to face rejection after rejection. Rejection is my biggest fear. Maybe there is a reason to all of this.

Wow . . . I feel better now. I'm still kinda bored though.

    Slow Traffic

It's been a slow week on the blog front. I need a more interesting life. But, as I've learned in the past: be careful what you wish for . . .

    1. CSF Akron's board gave approval to look into hiring a worship guy. I should have a phone interview next week maybe . . . keep it in your prayers.

    2. I couldn't find my keys this moring. Not good times.

    3. Where are the cicadas????? I have not seen one yet. It's perfect cicada weather in Frankfort.

    4. I messed up Tommy's link on the left. Sorry man . . . I'll fix it today.

    5. I've been wanting to post about the war/POW/Nick Berg thing . . . but I'm having trouble putting it into words (it's hard to write about stuff like that while I'm at work, and my computer at home is blown up.) Maybe this weekend . . .

Of course, NBC is a lot farther along than CBS. With the addition of Law & Order:Trial By Jury starting this fall, a whopping 18% of NBC's primetime lineup will be Law and order. In a few years, it may be 100%:

    Sunday:
    7:00pm Law & Order:Internal Affairs
    8:00pm Law & Order:Small Claims Court
9:00pm Law & Order: Criminal Intent
    10:00pm Law & Order:Juvie Court

    Monday:
8:00pm Law & Order: Traffic Court
9:00pm Law & Order: Parking Patrol
    10:00pm Law & Order:Miami

    Tuesday:
    8:00pm Law & Order:Tax Evasion Unit
9:00pm Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
    10:00pm Law & Order:Crime Scene Investigation

    Wednesday:
    8:00pm Law & Order:Restraining Order Enforcement
    9:00pm Law & Order:Trial By Jury
    10:00pm Law & Order

    Thursday:
    8:00pm Law & Order:Mail Fraud
    9:00pm Law & Order:Vice Squad
    10:00pm Law & Order:Las Vegas

    Friday:
    8:00pm Law & Order:Donut Shoppe
    9:00pm Law & Order:Aquittal By Loophole
    10:00pm Law & Order:Espanol

    Saturday:
    8:00pm Law & Order: Wal-Mart Security
9:00pm Law & Order: Campus Police
    10:00pm Law & Order:Boat Cops

I think Mario Lopes should take over for Jerry Orbach.

CBS Line-Up 2 years from now

Monday's CSI:Miami was used to launch yet another CSI show: CSI:New York. I'm a big fan of CSI and CSI:Miami, and New York looks like it will be pretty cool. But, I'm noticing a trend going here: If a crime show does well, let's spin it off over and over. NBC is doing that with Law and Order (which also has a spin-off coming this years.) I think what is going to happen is within a few years, CBS's entire lineup will be CSI shows. here is what it might look like:

    Sunday:
    7:00pm CSI:Anchorage
    8:00pm CSI:Maine
    9:00pm CSI:Delaware
    10:00pm CSI:FBI

    Monday:
    8:00pm CSI:Paris
    9:00pm CSI:Paris, TX
    10:00pm CSI:Miami

    Tuesday:
    8:00pm CSI:Queens
    9:00pm CSI:Staten Island
    10:00pm CSI:New York

    Wednesday:
    8:00pm CSI:Little Rock
    9:00pm CSI:Walla Walla
    10:00pm CSI:Kentucky

    Thursday:
    8:00pm CSI:Northern Kentucky
    9:00pm CSI:Fargo
    10:00pm CSI

    Friday:
    8:00pm CSI:Lincoln, Nebraska
    9:00pm CSI:Lincoln, Illinois
    10:00pm CSI:Lincoln Memorial

    Saturday:
    8:00pm CSI:OJ
    9:00pm CSI:Michal Jackson
    10:00pm CSI:Kobe

We just need to assign a theme song to each, which of course must be by "The Who" (a "Who Cares" song can be substituted.

    Non-site Update

Over the past few days, I've been focusing more on style than content on this blog. . . but not today. . .

    1. Weekend. Murfreesboro, TN. Nice place. I went to visit my brother and siter-in-law. A fun time was had by all. Well, I had a good time anyway. Just kinda hung out, free meals all around, and bowling on Saturday night. My arm is still about to fall off. I did win one game, and was second in the other two games. Got to hang out some with Misty's (my sister-in-law) family. They are cool too. I should go down there more often.

    2. Read some disturbing stuff about the POW-Nick Berg situation. Actually, more on that later. I have a lot to say on that.

    3. CSI:New York is going to be cool. Gary Sinise was a good pick. I'm not sure I follow the symbolism behing the dark almost greenish atmoshphere in the new york shots (where the shots in Miami are very bright.) Even in New York, Cain was brighter than the background and other characters.

    Welcome to the new blog

Well, here it is, my new blog. It's kinda like a new house . . . I'm all moved in, but it's a mess. I'll get it cleaned up as soon as I can.

Where are all the links, you may be wondering. Those are going on my new homepage, which is even a bigger mess than this one. The address to that is:

Eventually, I'll move the blog and live journal links back to this site.

That's all for now. Peace Out.

    Job Search Update

So, I got a call from the campus minister at University of Akron this afternoon, as I noted in the previous message. Anyway, after talking to him, I started thinking about the positon at Kent State that I had applied for(he is kinda heading up the search for that.) Anyway, I almost didn't send in a resume for that one. I really didn't think the position was a good fit for my personality or expirence. But, I figured that I would go ahead and apply for all of the open campus ministry positions that I could find. There aren't a lot, and I figured lets see what God might do. But, it wouldn't have bothered me to not get this one. What I didn't like about the rejection letter was the reason they gave: Too many job changed over the past few years.

Anyway, so he calls tonight (I was at work during the first call.) And we chat a bit. Anyway, he says he was impressed with my resume when he got it, but after reviewing it and checking my references, he didn't feel that I was the right fit. But, he has been hoping to bring on a worship minister for the Akron ministry for some time. Having recieved my resume, along with some other circumstances, he decided to go ahead and explore this possibility.

The whole campus ministry search has been quite frustrating. It's never fun to get rejected. It's even less fun to not even get a real shot. In this search so far: 7 openings, 6 resumes sent, 1 never replied for my request to get a job description, 1 took my application ,rejected me, then reopened talks with me, then rejected me again, one said he was going to phone interview me then never talked to me again, one didn't even consider me, sending me a letter telling me the position was filled, one I never heard from again, and one had to postpone thier search until summer.

It looked like I wasn't going to get a campus ministry. I even said a few days ago that it was going to take a miracle for me to get one now. And interestingly, that miracle may have started in January. Now, a lot still has to happen. The board doesn't even know about this. But, God is good. I'm speechless.
    |

New life in the ministry search

Well, in an ongoing pattern, a ministry that has previously rejected me has contacted me again about a position. This time it is a different position. This position is in Akron, OH. Originaly, I have applied for the position of campus minister at Kent State, for which they turned me down. However, Akron is looking for a worship minister, so it turns out that resume wasn't wasted. (if you are wondering about the connection, Akron and Kent have the same board of directors.

So . . . here we go again. Phone call tonight. Prayers are apprciated.

American Idol. . . Band Edition

They need to do an American Idol for bands. That way, Blue Team can make its comeback. Simon will make fun of us, but I think Paula and Randy will really dig our sound. In the first episode, we can do our rousing rendition of "Brown Eyed Girl." That will cause all the female viewer to like us. Plus, our version has a harmonica.

Over the weeks, America could become aquainted with our covers of Sweet Home Alabama, Heart of Gold, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Long Day, and others. At some point, we would even throw in our infamous O Suzzana to the tune of 500 miles.

Then, on the final episode, we would break out the big gun . . . Bad Day.

Then, we get a contact. And groupies. Sweet.

Then I would be able to get a boat. And I could have a party on it. And all of you would be invited.

Then I could be cool again. Just like the good ole days. I hate getting old. Okay, so it really doesn't bother me. But still . . . I was hot for 6 months. But, I didn't work my mojo. So, it left me.

Bill Ekhardt is my hero. So is John Wentz. And Kevin . . . and Justin Sanford.

    But my biggest hero . . .

    . . . Erik Estrada.

    Castles on Fire?

    1. Right here in central Kentucky, a castle caught on fire. That's right a castle. I've seen burning castles in movies before, but seeing it live on TV, well, that's even cooler. There is a castle in Versailles, KY, between Lexington and Frankfort. And last night, it caught on fire. Check it out:

If you don't beleive me, check it out for yourself here.

    2. I think enough time has passed where it is safe to say that "Beef, It's whats for dinner," was a more successful slogan than "Pork, the other white meat."

    3. I just finished reading through the gospels. I'm blown away with all of the weird stuff Jesus said. In the past, stuff that didn't really jive with my preconceived notions I probably noticed, but just didn't register. I just kinda glazed over it (I think a lot of us do that.) Then again, Jesus did say that he was intentionaly vague. The Bible is a lot more complex than most of us want it to be.

    Yeah more fun

    1. Another rejection . . . woo-hoo. I knew this one was coming, since they were supposed to make thier recommendation to the board on April 25 and still hadn't interviewed me. But, at least this one was a rejection I can be proud of. The guy who got it had a pretty impressive resume. Still, and interview would have been nice. I was really qualified for this one. But, a couple of months ago, I jokingly predicted someone from Purdue would get this. And sure enough, someone from Purdue got it.

    2. BLUE TEAM has a blog!!!!! Check it out here.

    3. Went to a Lexington Legends baseball game (minor league class A). It was cool. Later this summer I want find a Saturday and go to a Louisville game (AAA) in the afternoon and a Lexington game at night. Or vice versa. If you want to go, let me know.

    4. I think that's all for today. Prayer requests below.
    |

    Prayer Requests

Lots of my family members need prayer right now.

My mom and grandfather are having minor surgical procedures this week. My aunt is getting ready to begin radiation treatments this week.

Most of all, my 3 year old (next month) cousin has had heart and lung problems all her life. They have been able to fix the heart problems, but the doctors said last week that there is nothing else they can do for her lungs and that she will progressivly get worse. I'm not sure what the long term prognosis is, but it is not good.

Thanks everyone. With God all things are possible.

Ziggy Zoggy Ziggy Zoggy OY OI OY

    1. Kentucky got Randolph Morris. That makes 3 McD's All-Americans in this recuriting class (Plus another top 30 guy, AND Patrick Sparks.) I was so excited, I had to celebrate with a Big-Mac value meal (I guess that sponsership worked out for McD's).

    2. Ryan Seacrest. Where did this guy come from. A few years ago, nobody knew who he was. And now, he's got American Idol, On-Air, and Casey's top 40! I'm not complaining or anything. It's just kind of intriguing. He's not overly talented, but he's not bad either. Anyway, has there ever been a more obvious pseudonym than "Seacrest"? Okay, maybe Hugh Jackman. Which actually is kind of clever. Most of the time, such names seem innocent but then you find some innuendo (ie Ben Dover). But Hugh Jackman is the opposite. You see that name and are sure there is some innuendo in there. But, upon further review, you find out that there is not. Good stuff.

    3. I've been listening to some talk radio and watching some news coverage of this POW issue. It just amazes me at how flippant some people are about this. I caught the end of the O'Reily Factor last night, the part where he reads off viewer emails. It just amazed me. Apparantly, O'Reily came down hard on this issue. And these people were accusing him of a. overreacting or b. bringing down the president. And Sean Hannity, who I usually have a lot of respect for, pretty much dismissed this whole episode. It's troubling how some these people are trying to dismiss this because it might make Bush look bad. Anyway, I'm just upset over this.

    4. Playing around with Live Journal. If nothing else, I can now sign other live journals with ease. I might come up with a fun use for it. But, I think I'm sticking with the blog. Maybe I should check out xanga. But I've never been impressed with xanga's sites. Plus, LJ and XANGA are so elitist. Not the users, the hosts.

    5. Another reason you gotta love living in Kentucky.

    6. When all you all day long is sit around and read friends journals and blogs, it gets frustrating when they don't update. I'm not complaining. Really, it's more of a commentary on my life than it is on the people who aren't updating.

    Treatment of POW's

The recent story about our treament of some of our prisoners of war really have me outraged. I really think this is something that we should be very upset about, regardless of our political ideologies and stance on the war.

Many are saying that this is something that is way overblown and not as big a deal. I will grant that a. These are isolated incidents and b. Nothing really happened here that hasn't happened in a fraternity or high school football hazing. However, we don't accept this behavior from fraternities or high school teams, and we don't accept them from our military. And even if it is an isolated incident, we still should express outrage.

As I see it, one of the principles that we are fighting this war over is the idea that every human being has intrinsic value. Maybe you believe a war is not an acceptable way to defend that, and I can respect that position. However, one of the reasons that I do support this war is that, I think that at its most basic essence, this is what we are fighting for. With that, I think that our treatment of POW's should have that in mind: these are human beings with intrinsic value. This recent treatment is a violation of that, which should make us angry, regardless of whether we support the war and/or administration.

I think President Bush should offer an appology. I understand that it may not be his fault. However, in this case, he is the commander in chief, and is responsible. I hope he offers it, regardless of what political implications it may have (ie comming across as an admission of guilt.) One of the things I like about him is that he does what he thinks is right regardless of the PR results. I hope he does the right thing in this situation.

Also, the comparisons to Nazi Germany really upset me. Seriously, read the book "Night" and then try and compare it to this case. Not even close.

But, we should still be outraged. That's one of the purposes of democratic government.

    Blue Team

Well, since Bill has started his blog, the Blue Team references have come out in full force. However, most of the visitiors to this blog are from the Cincinnati era of my life, not the WKU days. So, many of you are not familiar with Blue Team. Blue team was my second band, but it was my first band that had songs and groupies, so it has an important place in my heart. We had a one year run, then broke up when I left to start seminary. About half of our songs were originals and half were covers (maybe a few more covers than originals.) Our covers included: Sweet Home Alabama, Brown Eyed Girl, Heart of Gold, Home Grown Tomatoes, and some others. Our originals included a song based on the Dr. Suess classic, "Green Eggs and Ham", Rover, Molly, and our most popular song, Bad Day. We never played a gig, we almost had one as part of a program in a dorm, but it never materialized. Our groupies often came to practice, however. Our biggest fan was Leanna Walker. Why did she have to marry Travis.

Anyway, I mention all of this because Bill in yesterdays blog told the story behind the song, Molly. You should read it. It's touching. It is a story that needs to be told. By the same token, I think the story behind Rover needs to be told. So:

    Song Stories:Rover

Back in my younger days I had a dog named Rover. Rover was a golden retriever. He was a really good dog, the kind you could take for a walk without a leash. We would go for walks, go play in the creek, or go to the softball field across the street and play fetch. At night he would sleep at the foot of my bed.

Well, one night the summer before I left for college, we were out for a walk. As we were going up the street, I noticed a lot of smoke. As we got down the street, we saw a burning house. I ran to a nearby payphone to call 911, then ran back to the house. I looked for Rover, and I saw him running toward the house. As I began to yell, I heard a child yelling for help. I looked through a second story window, and saw the child. I knew Rover was going to help him.

I ran to the door, but it looked like it was going to be impossible to get through the blaze. Because of the heat, I had to step off the porch. For what seemed like hours, but really was only a few minutes, I waited. Then, I saw Rover dragging the child out of the house to safety. I picked up the child and carried him to safety, but when I looked around, I saw Rover trapped under a burning beam. When I got the beam off of him, it was too late. Rover was gone.

I was pretty sad about the whole thing. But, at least I know that Rover died as a hero. And now he is immortalized in a song.

    Read the story of Molly

    Updogs

    1. Bill Ekhardt now has a blog. Bill is one of my very good friends from WKU. You should read his blog. He's still developing it. Go BLUE TEAM. Now all of Blue Team has a site.

    2. The whole POW thing has me pretty upset. More on that in a few days.

    3. Read this. Seriously, read it.

    4. I can't decide if "Well I never spent much time in school, but I've taught ladies plenty," or "when I wind up in the hay it's only hay, a hey hey," is the best line ever in a TV theme song, but either way, clearly the theme to "The Fall Guy" is the most underrated TV theme ever.

Its a slow day in Eric-blog land.

    Monday Monday

    1. The trip to Cincinnati was cool. It was a very encouraging weekend. I got to play with the worship team at UCC, which was a lot of fun. I was quite rusty though, and made a ton of mistakes. But, everyone was pretty gracious about it. The program at the banquet was great. It was great seeing the vision that I help form for the ministry come to fruition. It was good catching up with friends. All in all, it was just a good weekend.

    2. Sealab 2021 may well be the funniest 15 minutes on TV.

    3. My horse came in 2nd to last. I lost 10 dollars. Then again, that's what I get for playing a 30-1 longshot.

    4. All of the sudden, I can't escape the band Jet. This weekend, I read this article about them. Someone actually said they are saving rock and roll. That's a nice piece of hyperbole. But, I was impressed by part of the article. One thing that really struck me is how they don't cover up thier musical flaws with some of the industry tricks available. I have a lot of respect for that. I still don't like their music. Maybe I'll give them another shot.

    5. I took a little quiz on the internet. According to the results, I am a 7th Day Adventist. Which is quite interesting, considering the fact that I go to church on SUNDAY instead of SATURDAY! Look like the quiz missed a vital point.

    (c) 2007 a case study in awesomeness
