Treatment of POW's

The recent story about our treament of some of our prisoners of war really have me outraged. I really think this is something that we should be very upset about, regardless of our political ideologies and stance on the war.

Many are saying that this is something that is way overblown and not as big a deal. I will grant that a. These are isolated incidents and b. Nothing really happened here that hasn't happened in a fraternity or high school football hazing. However, we don't accept this behavior from fraternities or high school teams, and we don't accept them from our military. And even if it is an isolated incident, we still should express outrage.

As I see it, one of the principles that we are fighting this war over is the idea that every human being has intrinsic value. Maybe you believe a war is not an acceptable way to defend that, and I can respect that position. However, one of the reasons that I do support this war is that, I think that at its most basic essence, this is what we are fighting for. With that, I think that our treatment of POW's should have that in mind: these are human beings with intrinsic value. This recent treatment is a violation of that, which should make us angry, regardless of whether we support the war and/or administration.

I think President Bush should offer an appology. I understand that it may not be his fault. However, in this case, he is the commander in chief, and is responsible. I hope he offers it, regardless of what political implications it may have (ie comming across as an admission of guilt.) One of the things I like about him is that he does what he thinks is right regardless of the PR results. I hope he does the right thing in this situation.

Also, the comparisons to Nazi Germany really upset me. Seriously, read the book "Night" and then try and compare it to this case. Not even close.

But, we should still be outraged. That's one of the purposes of democratic government.
