    IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIt's Friiiiiiiiiiiiday

I came to the realization that my life is way to boring to record in a blog. So, I haven't posted in a few days.

    1. Well, the campus ministry search has some new life. I learned of a new opening yesterday. It's kind of a longshot. The position is a worship minister, but I think not having a music degree will hurt me in this particular one. We'll see. It's out of my hands.

    2. I thought about faith about over the past few days. I've wondered about what acting in faith should be in certain situations. Is faith doing something and expecting God to deliver the results? Or is it sitting tight and waiting for him to open the door? I think both are vailid in certain situations. I'm not sure which applies to mine.

    3. The ending to Without A Trace made me mad last night. If you saw it, you know what I mean.

    4. I decided on my alternate carreer. It's based on Bill Ekhardts reply to that message, along with a few inside jokes. I'm moving to Nashville and becoming a street musician. I'm going to put on sunglasses like I'm blind and will play. Bill will tuck one arm in his shirt and beat on a bucket with the other arm. This is based on an idea my friend Robert Mastin and I had back in our WKU days. However, instead of doing worship music, we will do popular music, but will change the words to the words of "O Suzanna," a game Bill and I have been playing for years. Try it. Start with the song 500 miles. (Cause I'm going to Al-a-bam-a with a ban-jo on my knee-ee). Then try Yellow Submarine (Al-a-bama with a banjo on my knee, banjo on my knee, banjo on my knee). Good times.

    5. This weekend . . . going to the NATI!!!! Alumni banquet. It's nice going back there. It's nice to be missed.

    New Lot In Life

Well, since the campus ministry thing isn't working out, it looks like I need a new career. Here are my top choices:

    Honorable Mention:

Baseball Player--whats not to like: good pay, travel expenses covered. If only I were athletic
Rock Star: This is maybe the most realistic job on this list. Granted, I'm not the best musician. But I am better than William Hung. And Jet. And 98 Degrees.

    And the top 5:

    5. Smoke Jumper-- Granted, this one probably looks a lot cooler than it is. Parachuting into forest fires. Doesn't that sound awesome. I'll bet once you get into the fire it ceases to be as much fun.
    4. Storm Chaser: I love storms. Whenever there is a storm, I'm out on the porch watching it. I think it would be cool to be watching it from a helicopter.
    3. Stunt Man: This would have to be a cool job. I would end up seriously hurt though.
    2. Boat Cop: Now this would seriously rule. I would get to ride around in a boat all day, pull over other boats, and pour their liquor in the river. What's not to like.
    1. Mattress Tester: Seriously, this has got to be the coolest job in the world.

    Cowbells and Draft Picks

    1. I was at an event that was part of the KY Derby festival on Friday. They were playing an hour long montage of Beatles songs. As I listened to these songs, I made a huge discovery into why the Beatles were so popular. They use a lot of cowbell. Probably in about 20% of their songs, which isn't nearly enough, but more than most bands. Therefore, the British invasion is directly linked to the cowbell.

    2. I watched the second day of the NFL draft, only to be highly disappointed. Only one of Kentucky's 4 prospects were drafted. It made me wonder what it would be like to sit there and not hear your name called on draft day. After working all of those years chasing your dreams. Then it occured to me: I just recently went "undrafted" as well. Only I didn't miss out on millions of dollars.

    3. Does it get any funnier than walking into a grocery store and hearing Captain and Teneal playing through the speakers. I mean, the mental image of the guy playing the organ wearing a captain's hat makes me laugh every time.

    4. Speaking of laughter, check out the George Bush Conspiracy Generator. A fun time for the whole family.

    5. Hope she learned her lesson.

    News from the job search

    1. Well, in a first in my life, I have been rejected twice for the same job in the same search. Pitt St. opted for the "other guy." Meanwhile, E. Illinois is supposed to pick this Sunday, and since they haven't contacted me for an interview yet, I guess that counts as a rejection. That puts me at 0 active resumes now. Good thing I spent all that money on seminary.

    2. Jennifer Garner is now officially in my top 5.

    3. I think I like cold pizza better than hot. Especially supreme.

    4. G-mail Rules!!!! Seriously, I haven't been this excited about e-mail since I got my very first vms account at WKU back in 1995.

    5. If you arent reading John Kruk's column on ESPN.com, well, you are missing some great sports writing.

    Advantages to the Blog

Since blogger.com is a part of google, I get to be one of the Beta testers to the new g-mail service they are going to be offering. Granted, I've only been using it for 15 minutes now, but I gotta say, its going to put hotmail and yahoo out of the email business. 1 MB of storage. Plus, the message organization is better (and it has a search engine for your email).

Anyway, I feel hip since I have access to something that isn't available to the public yet. Ahhh the cutting edge. If only I was this hip in other aspects of life. Maybe someday, I'll be cool like you are.

If you didn't get a message yet, my email is now: eric.bryant@gmail.com

    You can't judge a book (or band). . .

Back in the fall, me, Brack, and Nick were watching Conan O'Brien. A band called Jet was performing that night. And they were horrible. I mean horrible. One of the worst performances I had ever seen. I really cannot describe how bad this was. Normally, on a show, the host will go greet the band after then finish playing, and say something like "good job," or whatever. This time, Conan just kind of walked over there speechless.

Anyway, fast forward to last night. I'm wandering the Wal-mart music aisle. I notice the newly released "The OC: Mix 1," CD. Yes, go ahead and make fun of me. Anyway, I'm previewing it and seeing if it was something I might want to purchase. But, there is a song by Jet on there. Well, I listened to that track, and it wasn't terrible. I didn't really like the song, but it was well played. So I thought . . . maybe I was wrong about Jet. So, I located their cd, scanned it through the previewer, and lo and behold, more of the stuff I heard on Conan.

The moral of this story: Often our first impressions are wrong, but usually they are right.

That was awfully cynical. And no, I didn't buy the OC cd. Not yet, at least.

    TV Angst

Hey, if any of you saw CSI:Miami last night, I need your help. Due to my interview, I had to tape it. At lunch, I was watching my tape, and I got up to the part where the guy was being given the hearing test, and my tape ran out and I missed the end. Please post a comment and let me know what happened.

    Geek Factor

There is a test on the internet to find out of you are a geek or not. I guess I did okay:

    You are 35% geek
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.

Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

    Big Day Update

The interview went well last night. Well . . . I think it did. It's hard to tell sometimes. A few years ago when I was searching for an internship I interviewed with 3 campus ministries. In my opinion, 2 went really well, and the other one I botched really bad. I ended up getting one offer and two rejections. The one offer: from the interview that I messed up. Sometimes I think these things are so random.

Anyway, based on what Pitt State is looking for, I think I will be a strong canidate. So, we'll just wait and see. Looking for jobs is about the least fun thing to do in the world.

    Big Day For Eric

    1. Well, tonight I will be interviewing via webcam with Campus Christians at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. That's right, Kansas. My whole career in campus ministry is on the line tonight, so prayers would be appreciated.

    2. I went to Thunder over Louisville Saturday. Few things ever live up to thier hype, but this was definately one of those things.

    3. I have my horse all picked out for the Kentucky Derby: Minister Eric.

    4. I was browsing the Music aisle the other day, and I notices a Hanson album in the new releases. HANSON???? Aren't their 15 minutes up?? Shouldn't they be doing celebrity reality shows now? My mind is boggled.

    5. Ironic.

    Moments of self introspection

    1. I'm not normally the type to hold grudges. I'm fairly easy going, and difficult to make mad. And if I do get mad, I can usually vent my frustrations and get over it pretty quick. I think over the past ten years, there are maybe 5 people that I've been mad at longer than a few hours. Of those 5, there are 2 that have lingered on to this point.

As I was think about those two, I can to a startling realization. Both of them were connected with a failure in my life. I can't go into detail, because it would bring me really close to bad-mouthing these people, which is another blog all in itself (about bad-mouthing, not about the 2 people). What I realized is that I am not just mad at these people. To me, they have come to represent these failures. They were involved. The things that they did to me I could have easily forgiven. But, for whatever Freudian reason, I have projected more onto them and have come to resent them because of that.

What does all this mean. I don't know. Well, it does mean that I've taken too many psych classes. But, I do think it's a good step toward reconcilliation.

    2. I know my pirate vocab. Do you??

    3. One of my co-workers went to lunch 15 minutes before my first break. That means I gotta wait till she is back!! So inconsiderate. So now I'm cranky.

    4. I'm too lazy to even have a job. Nobody seems to realize that.

    5. I think medical billing people are the most bitter people in the world. Whenever I get a call, it rings through automatically. But, I have my phone on mute, so I have a couple of seconds before I answer. During those 2 seconds, I often hear this agonized sigh on the other side. I feel bad for them.

War, What is it good for?

    Long live "The Boss."

As it was previously mentioned in my blog, the whole war thing has me annoyed. Not because I agree or disagree with it, but more because of the coverage and many of the reactions I have heard about it. It's an incredibly complex issue. There are lots of compelling reasons to agree with the decision. There are a lot of compelling reason to disagree.

This being an election year, the issue has become quite politicized. John Kerry. Voted for the war. Is now against it. Now, I'm one to believe a person can struggle with an issue and change his mind. I've done that a few times myself. With Kerry, I don't buy it. It just seems obvious that he changes his mind to whatever makes political sense. I suppose he has to do that to get elected. It still disturbs me. That's one thing I do like about Bush . . . he stands by his convictions. That doesn't mean he's always right though.

Which takes me to another issue: why do evangelical christians have to blindly follow every Republican initiative?

Back to the war. The media coverage is annoying. You have the Fox news crowd and the talk radio people talking about how unpatriotic it is to disagree with the president on any issue involving security and the war and so on. Then you have the liberal media trying to use it to bring the president down. It's all making me sick.

With all that said, what I think bothers me most is how people fail to see the complexity of the issue. They get stuck on one side of the issue and don't even look at the other. It bothers me when I'm told to be a true christian or a true american that I have to be on a certain side of the issue.

A part of me is against the war. Loss of life is always a terrible thing, even if circumstances are justified. We should always seek peace.

Part of me is for the war. One thing I've learned reading through the Old Testament is that we are to take up for the guy who is being opressed. And Iraqis were being slaughtered by Hussien.

So where do I stand. I don't know. Really, this is something I have agonized over. Sometimes, it seems that there is not a right answer.

    Smokin' in the rain

Today is so rainy. It's the epitome of sleep weather. When I got in to work this morning, it was pouring. I come in at 9:00, which is the time of the first smoking break for all of the smokers in the building. I tell you what, smokers really are the most dedicated people in the world. Of course, most workplaces are now smoke free. But, these smokers will NOT be deterred. There they were, huddled under an umbrella getting their fix. Of course, as a non-smoker, I don't like having to walk through that smoke. It's not enough that they can't smoke inside, I want them away from the door as well. I want them on the other side of the parking lot. My rights are being VIOLATED. Okay, it's not really that big of a deal. But I am blown away by their dedication.

    Other random thoughts and observation.

    1. Seaking of dedication, I read Daniel last night. Talk about some hard core guys. Like the smokers, they were dedicated, faced persecution, and kept on going. A lot blew me away, but the part that really got me was when Shaderack, Meshack, and Abendigo were about to be thrown into the furnace. King Neb asked them how their God was going to save them, and their reply was (paraphrased), "God might save us, he might not, but either way, we aren't bowing to your God." They knew that God's will could go either way, but they knew that regardless of outcome God was taking care of them. It was a timely lesson for me.

    2. Bonds hit 660. And I missed it.

    3. This is a fun site. Some of it is kind of lame, but the TV and Cartoon themes will bring back some memories.

    4. After reading Tommy Stewart's blog yesterday, it reminded me that I am going to die bitter and alone. But, as I've thought about it, it's not such a bad thing.

    5. My supervisor just said, "It's cold and rainy. It's so bad I don't even want to go out and smoke." Well, I guess like, with anything else, some people just aren't that dedicated.

    Weekend Update

    1. Easter weekend was cool. My brother and sister in law came up unexpected. I miss them.

    2. I finished Ezekiel. Reading the prophets is very interesting. You learn a lot about how complex God is. We often try to figure out God or reduce Him to one single attribute (ie love). Reading the prophets, you will find some very sobering things along with some very comforting ones. In the end, you end up realizing how big he is, and how little we really understand Him.

    3. "Lazy people need money too." That's my new motto. Credit goes to Justin Sanford.

    4. After the first week of the season, my fantasy baseball team is in first place. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, well, you are the lucky one.

    5. Looks like I'm going to heaven after all.

    Bitterness and Stuff

Got a rejection letter yesterday from a campus ministry at Kent State. This one may be my favorite of all time. I got rejected (not even an interview) because I have changed jobs to many times over the last few years! Seriously. They are looking for someone who has "shown the ability to focus on one task over a period of time." Interesting. I can see how that might be important. What frustrates me is that I was focused on a task for that entire period of time: school. Arrrrrrr. It's time for a new line of work. Anyone know of someone who is hiring a mattress tester.

    On to the friday list:

    1. Heard on ABC Family last night: "He's stealing home!!! The JET is stealing home!!!!" What a great movie.

    2. How I have had my blog up for nearly 2 weeks without puting a link for yourethemannowdog.com, well, that's just inexcusable.

    3. On a brighter note, I have a tentatively scheduled interview with Pittsburg State University, Kansas in about a week.

    4. I promise, my blogs aren't always going to be lists. Well, maybe they will be!! Nobody reads it anyway. Well, at least nobody comments. Kevin does, and sometimes John, but nobody else. Okay, I comment sometimes, but really, does that even count.

    5. One thing I've learned by starting this blog: I'm too lazy to be a journalist. I considered it for a while in college, and have thought about it often since then. If I had to do this with a deadline, I'd be in big trouble.

    5 For Thursday

    1. Western Kentucky University. They don't miss a thing. They have managed to find me at my last 3 phone numbers. Last night I got yet another call from the alumni association asking for money. Why is this so amazing? Well, at CBC&S I would actually give them my updated info and my stuff would still get sent to old addresses. Caused me some trouble. In a related story, they keep sending me stuff saying that they have not recieved my registration for classes (if you are new to my world, I graduated in May 03).

    2. There is comedy, there is high comedy, and there is The Cowbell Project.

    3. Today is even nicer than yesterday!!!

    4. I'm up to #5 on google now!!!

    5. Juice boxes were the coolest thing growing up. I still like them. The problem is, those 2.5 fluid ounces just don't do it for me anymore. They need to make adult sized juice boxes. You know, ones that would hold half a gallon.

    Faith, Pride, and Desparation

So this whole ministry search has had me all bummed out. It was looking like out of six resumes, I was not going to get one interview. I know I'm not perfect, but that's kinda crazy. Monday I was really frustrated. Through it all, I knew it was all in God's hands, but for whatever reason I was not finding comfort in that. It's a real challenge of my faith.

But then Tuesday I get an email from a campus ministry in Kansas. Back in Feb/March, I sent them a resume, then they had me fill out and application. A few days after I completed the application, they sent me an email saying they had chosen a final canidate. It was quite an unceremonious dumping.

So Tuesday, I get this email saying they are still searching and if I am still looking to let them know. Now, this is a tough one. These guys dissed me bad, and what it amount to is that I am Plan B. Not really flattering.

Luckily, desparation wins over pride any day.

Also, today is the most beautiful day of the year so far. Spring in Central Kentucky, it just can't be beat.

    Top 5 Tuesday!!!!!

    1. Ezekiel--cool book. God is so cool!

    2. I found out that my good buddy Justin Sanford has a live journal. Seriously, this was like internet Christmas for me. I recently figured out that what I like about Justin is that he is what I would be like if I was cool. He is a fun guy and can be quite insightful. Many time we would be talking and he would say something, and I would think "Wow, you weren't supposed to figure that out for another 5 years." Check his site out.

    3. When you think about it, doesn't it come down to the fact that Doogie Howser is the father of electronic journaling.

    4. Heard on Jay Leno last night: "This weekend Hellboy was number one at the box office. A few weeks ago, The Passion was number one, then Dawn of the Dead was number one, and now Hellboy. Aren't we moving in the wrong direction?"

    5. My Google project is failing. I droped from #8 to #18. I tried Kevin's idea, so we'll see tomorrow if it works.

    A String of Unrelated Thoughts

    1. This weekend, I'm missing Weird Al to go to a wedding. Where the heck are my priorities.

    2. I'm getting sick of all of the war/terrorism/9-11 coverage. I just don't know what to think about it anymore. Every aspect has become so politicized. I just don't trust anyone on either side of it. Maybe more on this later.

    3. It's BASEBALL time again!! I'm more excited about the start of this season than I have been for a while. Not sure why. The Giants are a mess right now: the ace and closer both on the DL, and the Barry Bonds steriod thing kinda bums me out.

    4. Been reading through the prophets. Hard core stuff. It really gives you a picture of what issues are important to God (which ironicly are not the priorities of the American church these days.)

    5. These t-shirts are hilarious.

    6. Dangerous Wonder and Messy Spirituality by Mike Yaconelli. I highly recommend both.

    7. Has there ever been better use of a fiddle in a Rock song than in "Come On Eileen?"

    8. I watch too much TV. I need a social life. I can't stay up past midnight. I can't sleep past 8:30. It all adds up to one thing. I'm getting old.

    9. There is not a funnier show on right now than Chappell's Show. This show should be getting a lot more hype than it is.

    10. The whole ministry search thing is at a critical point. According to the timelines given by a few of them, interviews should be starting soon, but so far, no contacts. It's nerveracking.

    And that's all for now.
